Are you making progress on your SWOT analysis?

Have you started working on your S.W.O.T analysis yet? In a recent post, I  shared some information and my free forms you can use to work on it. If you haven’t had a chance yet, print the S.W.O.T analysis for the Tourism Industry forms and let’s do some of the work together!

How to fill in your S.W.O.T worksheet:

You will see it is a basic form with an area to list strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. Put at least three comments in each area. Are there any strengths or opportunities that stand out? These are areas to concentrate and develop because they will directly grow your business.

How about weaknesses, or threats? These are areas that need help because they will limit the success of your business.

Time to prioritize your list

Once you have a group list assembled, take some time to prioritize the items in each area.

What one action can you take under opportunities that will help you be more successful? What one item under weaknesses can management start to tackle and repair? While this exercise can seem simplistic, it is actually a very powerful tool. I will sometimes write #1, #2, and #3 next to elements to force me to prioritize.

Here is an example:

Let’s use the group tour business as an example. Say you want to start getting group tours to stop at your attraction, but you have never had any buses stop and aren’t sure how to change that.

Strengths

Large facility that can handle groups of 50 or more

Restaurant/ food facilities

Big parking lot

Near expressway exit

Weaknesses

Not known in group tour industry

No experience working with groups

Not open regular hours ( only open Tuesday-Saturday from 10-3)

No money for advertising

Opportunities

Speak with DMO about hosting an upcoming FAM tour

Visit other nearby attractions that already get bus groups and ask to partner

Threats

Other attractions nearby are putting more money into this market and getting lots of business

Some staff do not want to work with bus groups

Economy is affecting visitation.

I hope you can see that by sitting down and starting to write these items down, it will begin to help you develop a plan.

When you look at this list, what do you see as the best opportunity? The best strength to capitalize on?

How about weaknesses and threats? Choose one and begin to tackle it.
